About the organization

Some 750 kindergartens, elementary schools, high schools, technical colleges, trade schools and colleges operate in Hungary in the maintenance of 870 foundations, associations, public companies, economic organizations and private individuals.

The educators of independent and foundation schools initiated alternative, reform-pedagogic goals and methods and provide a new kind of professional training. As mentioned before, the parents choosing these schools desire better and more humane education for their children or want them to be educated in institutes expressing certain interests or philosophies better.

Association of Hungarian Independent Schools

The Association of Hungarian Independent Schools was founded in Budapest, on the 25th of April, 1992. Its founder chairperson was György Várhegyi. For the time being, its board holds 15 presidency members, a three-member ethical and an also three-member supervising committee.

The Association operates openly. Membership can be obtained by any educational institution that is maintained by legal entities, private individuals or non-governmental and non-clerical organizations that agree with its aims. The joining procedure can take place with a written request of admission.

What does the Association offer for independent schools and kindergartens?

The Association creates opportunity for the schools to express opinions on different processes and decisions concerning them. It also provides a forum for discussing and solving their problems. It advocates the interests of the institutes, forms and communicates views and suggestions on laws-in-progress concerning their activities, and protects the schools from any kind of distinctive efforts.

The Association regularly organises conferences, forums, meetings and other professional programmes in accordance with the demands of its members. On this occasions the central topic of discussion can be current professional problems just as general questions of functioning.
The Association had worked out its own self-valuation based system of quality insurance containing high standard criteria. Its board of independent experts advances and judges the results of the self-valuation process and awards the prize of ”Qualified School/Kindergarten of the Association of Hungarian Independent Schools” for the worthy institutions.
The Association also assists both operating and newly established schools with professional advising, consultation, judicial aid and economical counsel.

The Association of Hungarian Independent Schools had founded and maintains the Independent Pedagogical Institute.

The Independent Pedagogical Institute had started its work in October, 2001 as a professional-pedagogical background-organization for private and foundation schools. Among its aims and tasks it holds general services (such as professional counsel, monitoring, valuation and training) as well as initiating innovative developments and publicly representing professional autonomy.
