About us

The Hellenic Private Schools Association was founded in 1917.

It is a nationwide association and almost all Greek private schools are members.

The association strives:

  • For the establishment of a decentralised education system in Greece, which will afford all schools maximum autonomy. Under such a system, the government would set the minimum educational goals that all schools should fulfil and thereon schools would be free to set additional goals of their own and to form their own curricula and to adopt means of their choice to achieve them.
  • To promote private education and its merits to the Greek society.
  • To assist progress in education by adopting innovative teaching aids and pedagogical methodology.
  • To eliminate the unfavourable financial treatment afforded by the Greek State to parents who enrol their children in private schools, compared to those who choose public schools. Within this scope lies also the implementation of an educational coupon for parents who choose private schools.
  • To gain access to European and National funds that are currently available to public schools but are as yet denied to private schools.
  • To represent private schools in legislative, judicial, European, State and Municipal authorities as well as in international organisations.
  • To assist private schools towards achieving higher efficiencies in all areas of their operation.
  • To create an atmosphere of cooperation and solidarity between private schools in Greece and to facilitate cooperation between private and public schools.
