About the organization

AEEP is the Portuguese national association of independent schools. It was founded in 1975 and has member schools all over the country. AEEP members cover pre-school, basic and secondary education of all types: regular tracks, artistic tracks, special education, vocational tracks. The owners of the schools are also very diverse: associations, foundations, cooperatives of parents or teachers, companies and individuals. We also represent religious (Catholic, Islamic) and nonreligious schools.
Our moto is: “The freedom to offer diverse educational projects is the core of independent education – our diversity is our wealth”.
The schools are represented at AEEP by their Principal and their Owner.
In representation of Portuguese independent schools, AEEP works with the Ministry of Education, the Portuguese Parliament and other public authorities. AEEP provides a range of services to its members: legal advice, technical support, consultancy and training to headmasters, teachers and other educators.
AEEP is also responsible for the collective bargaining agreement with the unions of teachers and staff. As a social partner in education, AEEP nominates people to the National Education Council, to the General Council of the National Assessment Board and to the National UNESCO Commission.
At the international level, AEEP has a strong commitment to ECNAIS and to EFEE (European Federation of Education Employers).
