The Work

VBS is the Dutch Association of Independent Schools in primary, secondary and special needs education. More than two hundred school boards and four hundred schools - with over one hundred and ten thousand students - are members of VBS. Many of our members are smaller school boards and schools with their own (pedagogical) identity. VBS stands for small scale in education: schools and school boards that are close to parents and students.

VBS stands up for the freedom of education: the right of parents to have their children being taught according to their values and principles. Diversity in our society and the fact, that every child is different and has its own needs, asks for schools with a unique character and vision. This unique character of schools especially comes about when parents or others closely involved take the initiative to start a school. This is possible thanks to Article 23 of the Dutch Constitution, which makes independent schools possible.

What does VBS do for its members?

For its members, VBS is a lobbyist, helpdesk and connector of schools and people.  In everything we do, we act from our values of close involvement with our schools and expertise

Founder ECNAIS

For VBS, freedom of education does not stop at Dutch borders. VBS also advocates the freedom of education in a European context. This is done through the European Council of national associations of independent schools (ECNAIS), of which VBS is one of the founders.
